AI is changing the world of work – is the skilled crafts sector becoming more attractive again?
Artificial intelligence is currently evolving at a pace that would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago.
Writing texts, preparing quotes, analyzing data, creating images, answering customer inquiries, programming, or automating entire workflows: many tasks for which people were previously needed at desks can now already be partially supported or taken over by AI.
And here at Dach PRO, we are therefore asking ourselves a completely different question:
Could AI, of all things, ensure that the skilled crafts sector becomes significantly more attractive and valuable over the next few years?
AI can do a lot – but it won't climb onto the roof
Of course, AI will also change the skilled crafts sector.
Quotes can be created faster. Construction site documentation can be simplified. Office work can be automated. Material requirements can be planned better and customer communication organized more efficiently.
This is a huge opportunity for craft businesses.
But in the end, someone still has to do the work.
An AI doesn't roof a house.
It doesn't install gutters.
It doesn't edge sheet metal on the construction site.
It doesn't build a roof truss.
And it doesn't repair a leaking flat roof either.
In our opinion, this is precisely where one of the major differences between many classic office jobs and the skilled crafts sector lies.
The skilled craftsman could become even more valuable
For years, we have been talking about the shortage of skilled workers and the lack of new talent in the crafts sector.
At the same time, young people were long told that the classic path of school, university, and an office job was automatically the better career.
This calculation could change.
If companies can handle certain office processes with less staff thanks to AI, while people are still needed to build houses, renovate roofs, install heating systems, or mount electrical equipment, the social value of these professions might also change.
Good craftsmen could become not less, but significantly more valuable in the future.
AI vs. skilled crafts is the wrong discussion
We don't believe the future is:
AI or craftsmen.
The more exciting combination is:
Craftsmen + AI.
The roofer remains a roofer – but perhaps spends less time in the office in the evenings.
The master craft business remains a craft business – but can organize quotes, planning, documentation, and communication much more efficiently.
This is exactly why more and more digital solutions specifically for craft businesses are currently emerging.
The technology is not intended to replace the actual craft.
It is intended to make the person who masters the craft more productive.
Perhaps a new era for the skilled crafts sector is just beginning
For years, the skilled crafts sector was partly underestimated.
Yet, it is here that real value is created.
At the end of a working day, there is a roof, a facade, a house, or a functioning system.
And this work will still be needed in a world full of artificial intelligence.
Perhaps the biggest change in the coming years will therefore not be that AI replaces the skilled crafts sector.
Perhaps exactly the opposite will happen:
AI takes over more and more office work – and in doing so, makes it visible how valuable real craftsmanship is.
The skilled crafts sector has a future
Not in spite of artificial intelligence.
Perhaps even to a certain extent because of it.
What do you think?
Will the skilled crafts sector become more attractive and valuable over the next 5 to 10 years thanks to AI?
Or do you believe that AI will also change things on the construction site much more drastically than we think today?
